Built for the prelate, poet, and philologist Liévin van der Beken—also known for his role in founding the Jesuit College of Leuven—the mansion reflects some of the patron’s humanist aspirations. As Geert Bekaert points out, the Hôtel Torrentius serves as “the guarantee and setting for his freedom.” Located near the Church of the Holy Cross, the building was purchased in 1978 by architect Charles Vandenhove to serve as his studio. Vandenhove’s project in a complex of significant heritage value appears to be a turning point in the architect’s career. Building on a modernist style at times tinged with brutalism, Vandenhove works in fits and starts, adopting a new classical language that he would later apply in iconic projects such as the renovation of the Hors-Château neighborhood.

Built in the second half of the 16th century and attributed to the Liège architect Lambert Lombard, the Hôtel Torrentius is one of the finest examples of patrician architecture in […]

["post-253","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
